Erythrite. I pronounce it er-eth-rite. I've heard it pronounced ih-eeth-rite. Not sure which is correct. It's not like you can confuse it with all the other minerals that sound like Erythrite 😁

For me it was Chalcedony. Kal-sed -oh-nee. (Please don’t tell me I’ve still got it wrong.) 😂

I was talking about gemstones to a Chinese engineer where I used to work. When I said Chalcedony to him he gave me a strange look and asked me what I just said? Apparently it has a different meaning in Chinese....one I can't post here!

Sugilite is very commonly mispronounced in English with a soft g, like "soojeelite", but it is named after a Japanese doctor Sugi, whose name is pronounced with a hard g as in geese.

Guess I am seeing a pattern in my own pronounciation, of mineral names, like place names, from growing up on the east coast: I "swallow" extreme syllables. For Sugilite, I say "Sue jill ite". Thank god I dont pronounce the Peabody Museum, like the town ! Pea buh die !

I must admit I was one of the former. That is until I started learning Japanese. Now it is only "su-gee-lite"!
